Patriots of the Revolutionary War
Who can join the SAR?
The SAR is a "lineage" society. This means that each member has traced and documented their family tree back to a point of proving to have an ancestor who supported the cause of American Independence during the years 1774-1783.
Do You Have A Patriot Ancestor?
If you already know that you have such an ancestor, go straight to the "Steps to Become a Member of the SAR" page. If you aren't sure whether any of your ancestors lived in the United States during the Revolution, don't lose heart. Many people who never set foot in the United States supported the American colonists' struggle against British domination -- for example the king of Spain. Many patriots (or their descendants moved to foreign lands and their descendants moved back later, not knowing their ancestors were here before. Many French, German, and Spanish soldiers and sailors fought in support of American independence and returned home without making their descendants aware of their participation in gaining American independence.
A list of the Patriot Ancestors associated with the membership of the Louisville-Thruston Chapter is posted below. Click on the State or other territory/country noted below to jump to a list of the associated Patriots. If you do not see your ancestor listed, do not be concerned. It may just be that a current member has not been associated with that person. Thousands of men and women supported the cause of American Freedom.
If you are a member and see a person listed below, you may consider completing a Supplemental Application to further expand your connection to the past. For each additional documented Patriot ancestor, a supplemental star can be affixed to the member badge. The star is gold and one-quarter inch in diameter. This five-pointed star is used to denote additional or supplemental Revolutionary War ancestors that have been approved by the National Society. Many Members have 2 or more documented Patriot Ancestors, with some having as many as 10, 15, or 20, or more documented Patriot ancestors.
If any of the patriots' names listed below is your ancestor, you can search the NSSAR patriot search database to find member applications who have used the same patriot. Click here to go to the NSSAR Patriot Search page.
